3a. Introduction to Verb and Verb Phrase.
*  What is a verb?
==> A Verb is a word used to express the existence of a state, or the doing of an action.
A. Action
Examples:
-          She watches TV.
-          Sok plays football.
-          He sings a song.
-          They walk to school.
B. State
Examples:
-          She seems kind.
-          I have two dogs.
-          Mr. Henry likes basketball.
-          He wants me go to study.

*  What is a Verb Phrase?
==> A Verb Phrase is a group of words that can function in a sentence in the same way as a single verb.
Examples:
-          She is reading book.
-          We have been looking for you everywhere.
-          You can read this book.
-          Helga should have known what to do.

            + In the table below will show you the structure and some examples of verb phrase.
            + A Verb Phrase generally has a main verb as its main word.

==> Notices:
*  the auxiliary verb are verb used with main verb to give other information about action and state.
*  the main verb, any verb that is not an auxiliary verb. A main verb has meaning on its own.
In the diagram below will show you more about the structure of verb phrase

 


            Depend on the diagram above, the auxiliary verbs combine with other verbs in five patterns.
    1. Modal pattern (Modal + verb)
Examples:
-          The shop will open.
-          They could swim.
-          She must come.
-          Phearum can speak English.
    1. Perfect pattern (Have + Participle)
Examples:
-          The shop has opened.
-          The parents have finally named the baby.
-          The general had misled his troops.
-           My brother has sold his car.
    1. Progressive pattern (Be + Verb(-ing))
Examples:
-          The student is alerting the teacher.
-          Our neighbors were listening to loud music.
-           Dare has been learning English for five years.
-          She had been closing the windows when the storm hit.
    1. Passive Pattern (Be + Participle)
Examples:
-          Three stealers are arrested.
-          The crops were harvested last week.
-          The house is painted by professionals.
-          The shop was opened.
    1. Operator (Do + Verb (base form))
Examples:
-          She doesn’t play tennis.
-          I don’t read this book.
-          Chamreoun didn’t walk to school.
-          I do love her.




3c. The functions of Verb Phrase
            Verb Phrase has three main functions.
  1. Verb Phrase expresses an action.
Examples:
-          This book is written by my sister.
-          I have bought her two books.
-          Sreytouch doesn’t speak Khmer.
-          She is watching TV.

  1. Verb Phrase expresses a state
Examples:
-          He has had two books.
-          We are having a party tomorrow.
-          I am seeing the manager next week.
-          It is believe that he has died.
==> State verb cannot usually have a Progressive form.

  1. Verb Phrase expresses possibility, necessity, and contingency.
==> The nine auxiliary modal verbs that can function as modals are can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would. These Auxiliary verbs is added before action or state verb to add meaning of that action or that state verb (which follow it).
Examples:
-          You may borrow the car tonight.
-          By the time I could start, you will have already finished.
-          You must wash your hands before eating.
-          Shall I have a cup of coffee?
