I. Introduction to Phrase
What is a
Phrase?
A Phrase: is any group of two or
more words that can occupy the same slot in a sentence as a single word. Or we
can say a phrase is a group
of words
functioning as a single unit in the syntax of a
sentence.
Examples:
The highlighted words in each of the following
sentences make up a phrase:
o
She
bought some spinach when she went to
the corner store.
o
Lightning
flashed brightly in the night sky.
o
They
heard high pitched cries in the middle of the night.
o
In
early October, Giselle planted twenty tulip bulbs;
unfortunately, squirrels ate the bulbs and none bloomed.
o
Small children often insist
that they can do it by themselves.
II. Types of Phrases
Phrases are classified according to the part of speech (noun,
verb, adjective, etc) that the main word in the phrase belongs to. In English
there are five main kinds of Phrases.
