1a. Introduction to Noun and Noun Phrase
*  What is a noun?
==> A Noun is a word used to name of anything.
   Examples:
      A. Name of a concreteness:
            - Name of a Place:       Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Khan Daun Penh, etc
            - Name of a Person:    Vary, Kanha, Piseth, Mr. Henry, etc
            - Name of a thing:       pen, table, book, motor, car, gold, etc
            - Name of an animal:   cow, pig, horse, dog, cat, bird, etc
           
      B. Name of an abstractness:      
            - Name of action:        theft, arrival, revenge, murder, help, reading, etc
            - Name of quality:       beauty, wisdom, intelligent, ability, skill, patience, etc
            - Name of status:         boredom, poverty, youth, freedom, loyalty, etc

*  What is a Noun Phrase?
==> A Noun Phrase is any phrase that performs the function of a single noun or pronoun is a larger phrase or in a sentence.
Examples:
            -  She gave him a great big kiss.
            -  They are both excellent teachers.
            -  There’s a tall, good-looking man outside who wants to talk to you.
            -  He had been watching her all evening.
            -  He’s such a kind man.

1b. The structure of Noun Phrase

            + A noun phrase generally has a noun (or pronoun) as its main word.

==> Notices:
*  Determiner: word such as article or a possessive adjective or other adjective that typically comes at the beginning of noun phrase.
*    Modifier: word or phrase that modifies and limits the meaning of another word.
*  Head-word or the head of a phrase is the word in the phrase that defines what sort of phrase. The head word of noun phrase is the noun or pronoun being described or referred to in the phrase.

1c. Functions of Noun Phrase
            Like Noun, Noun Phrase can function as following:
1.    Subject of a verb
Examples:
-          The cat chased the mouse.
-          Many people come to Cambodia.
-          Three students are reading books.
-          My sister has been to Paris.
2.    Subject complement
Examples:
-          Vary is a pretty girl.
-          They are my good friends.
-          He looked like a tall man.
-          Kanha will become a good teacher.
3.    Object of verb (Direct object)
Examples:
-          The waiter brought two glasses of beer.
-          Her boy friend has read a lot of book.
-          The old lady was wearing a thick woolen coat.
-          I don’t much like modern pop music.
4.    Object of verb (Indirect object)
Examples:
-          I’ve lent your brother my car.
-          They will buy me a beautiful car.
-          I gave the old beggar money for a cup of tea.
-          Lyty took his wife some flowers.
==> In four sentences above:
            + Direct object usually refer to thing (75%)
            + Indirect object usually refers to person.


5.    Object complement
Examples:
-          My teacher elected Miss. Phaktra the class monitor.
-          He made her his personal assistant.
-          He named her a little girl.
-          We consider Henry a very good teacher.
6.    Object of Preposition
Examples:
-          They live in a beautiful house.
-          She goes to my homeland.
-          I am sitting on the table.
-          Mr. Ravy is reading near a black man.
7.    Adverbial Equivalent:
Examples:
-          I’ll see you tomorrow night.
-          Nest year we’ll do things differently.
-          She is feeling a good deal better today, thank you.
-          I’m not the least bit worried about where she is.
8.    Appositive to the subject
Examples:
-          Mr. Henry, a teacher of English, wins $1,000.
-          My neighbor, Mrs. Lee, is flying to the USA nest week.
-          John Milton, the famous poet, was born in this house.
-          He, the cause of all my problems, got off scot-free while I, the victim, was fined $ 500.
9.    Appositive to the object.
Examples:
-          I saw Mr. Henry, their class monitor, went to Kandal province yesterday.
-          I want to meet your director, Mr. Phin Hen.
-          Miss. Sarorn asked him, her boyfriend, to kiss her.
-          She wants them, her parents, buy her a car.
==> We use them to add more information into our sentences and give more information about someone or something that we have already named.
